American poet Tom Clark is interested in notions of urban transformation and juxtaposition such as the significant t gentrification that certain neighbourhoods in Washington underwent in the 20th century. In the Shadow of the Capitol is a collection of photographs taken by photojournalist Carl Mydans in 1935 for the U.S. Resettlement Administration. The images capture black and white Washington neighbourhoods such as Georgetown and those that surround the city in the northeast of the state when these areas were either regarded as slums or ghettos.
